Brent M. Eastwood, PhD, is the Senior Defense Editor and Columnist for the National Security Journal. He was formerly a Fellow for Technology and Innovation at the R Street Institute, a think tank in Washington, DC. Prior to that, he was the Defense and National Security Editor of 1945. 1945 is a foreign policy and international relations web magazine also based in Washington, DC. He is the author of Don’t Turn Your Back on the World: A Conservative Foreign Policy. He also wrote Humans, Machines, and Data: Future Trends in Warfare. Brent is an Adjunct Professor at American University where he teaches courses on terrorism. He is a venture partner and defense and national security advisor for the Veteran Fund, a venture capital fund in Silicon Valley.

He was formerly a Professorial Lecturer at The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, DC. While teaching at the GWU Elliott School, Brent completed a legislative fellowship in the U.S. Senate where he advised U.S. Senator Tim Scott on Armed Services and Foreign Relations issues including conducting policy reviews on Russia, China, and Iran.
He was formerly Founder and CEO of GovBrain. GovBrain was a FinTech company that automatically predicted world events using machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Previously he was a foreign policy intelligence analyst at The Langley Intelligence Group Network, a digital geopolitical risk and private intelligence firm in the nation’s capital.
He is the author of the book The Origins of Internet Video and the book Solutions for a 21st Century Economy. He also co-wrote the Economic Freedom Index from the Pacific Research Institute and Forbes Magazine. Brent has been published in the academic journals Applied Research in Economic Development and American Foreign Policy Interests.
In 2012, he was selected by Market News International (MNI) for a competition to forecast U.S. leading economic indicators, and in 2013, he won a forecasting prize from MNI. Brent was awarded for once predicting the exact monthly U.S. job number during that year. In 2011, Brent was named to the Wharton School Advisory Panel of Executives at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2010, he received the “New Mexico Best Economic Forecaster Award” from PNM Resources and Wells Fargo for predicting a market bottom in the spring of 2009 and for predicting accurate levels for the DJIA and S&P 500 at the end of 2009.
Brent founded and led the political consultancy EastwoodNet, LLC from 2004 to 2009 and served as Policy Adviser, Speech Writer, Legislative Analyst, and General Consultant for numerous campaigns at the Presidential, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and Gubernatorial level. EastwoodNet was featured in the Wall Street Journal in October of 2009.
In 2008, Brent served on the event staff at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis. He was an academic observer at the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Peace Conference in Annapolis, Maryland in 2007. Brent was chosen to represent the U.S. at the 2006 NATO Summit “Young Leaders’ Forum” in Riga, Latvia where he led a study group and gave foreign policy recommendations on the war in Afghanistan to the NATO Secretary-General.
Brent was also an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government where he taught graduate seminars in national security, governance, and public policy.
While in graduate school, Brent served as a Defense Analyst in Science and Technology for the RAND Corporation’s National Defense Research Institute. He conducted strategic policy, performed technical analysis, and co-authored two studies for the Under Secretary of Defense, Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics.

He is a former U.S. Army Infantry officer and Distinguished Military Graduate with five years of military experience. Brent has earned a PhD in Political Science/ Public Policy, an MA in Political Science/ International Relations, an MS in Journalism, and a BA in English. Brent lives with his wife and son in Washington, DC.
